Ashley Hay is the author of THE RAILWAY MAN’S WIFE that is finding a new audience stateside following the recognition and accolades it received in both Australia and the U.K. Hay’s novel drew me to it each and every day even thought at times I had to put it down. It was quite an emotional roller coaster ride that vacillated between loss, hope and the path to new beginnings that tugged on my heartstrings.
Completely wrong about where this novel was headed from the start. And its style of writing felt different with a flow that almost felt like poetry. From start to finish I was not sure what waited in the next chapter. And those chapters could take place in either the past or the present.
The book is set in a small town in Australia called Thirroul and year is 1948. The war is ending and Anikka (Ani) Lachlan is relieved her daughter Isabella and her husband are intact. Mac, her husband did not go off to war instead he stayed behind to be with his family and work on the rails. They enjoyed a sweet life while it lasted.
Two of the town’s residents, childhood friends, return after the war Roy McKinnon who wrote poems in the war that earned him some notoriety. Frank Draper took a while to return after the war but picked up as the town’s doctor. Neither of the men returned without scars from the war and now both are trying to find a new normal after the war.
The town of Thirroul is also home to a railway library that becomes a backdrop of the story during the second half. These railway libraries were new to me, are they everywhere or just Australia? I cannot wait to learn more about them. Books and writing play a prominent role in the story which is always welcome.
So I must draw this post to a close as I do not believe I can reveal more about the story or my thoughts as I chose not to give anything away. An aspect of the beauty of the story in THE RAILWAY MAN’S WIFE is feeling the characters emotion and discovering it for yourself.
