Zevin has crafted a novel based in a bookstore that has books and book lovers as main characters and a special few that never give up on the love of reading. Along the way there is loss, a love story, the power of love as a parent, friendships, hurt and mistakes. But there is always the constant of books.
A.J. Fikry and his deceased wife have a bookstore on the small summer retreat spot of Alice Island where his wife was raised. The bookstore is failing and A.J. does not know which way to turn except to the bottom of a bottle. One day Amelia, a new rep for Knightley Press, calls upon the unpleasant A.J. that starts a connection.
But one night that all changed based on a vision, theft and the give of the one thing that could save him a bundle left in the aisles of the bookstore. A.J. in turns adopts and raises this baby with the help of his sister-in-law, the police chief and in this small community all is renewed.
Change does not come without some heartache and secrets to be exposed. But everyone manages to find their way and the book store flourishes with a new start too. This read will make you smile and tear up and maybe even cheer out loud. And even if I am wrong about any of those emotions above it is definitely a read you will be glad to not have missed.
I thoroughly enjoyed THE STORIED LIFE OF A.J. FIKRY and I am so glad that She Reads Books Club made this selection. And of course a big thank you to Algonquin Books for making this available to us.
